Steve Jobs’s NFT-Linked Sandals are sold for $218,000

According to reports, the classic brown Birkenstocks were worn “at several crucial occasions in Apple’s history.”

Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, “personally owned and wore” a pair of Birkenstock sandals. They were sold for almost $218,000.

The sandals, which were worn by Jobs “through many critical occasions in Apple’s history,” come with a unique 1-of-1 digital representation produced on the Polygon blockchain, according to Julien’s Auctions. The non-fungible token (NFT) owner “is not obtaining ownership rights or Intellectual Property (IP) rights” to the NFT and cannot make money off it, according to the terms and conditions of the sale.

The lot attracted 19 bids, which was more than its projected selling price of $60,000–$80,000. Jobs “would wear this particular pair of sandals throughout the 1970s and 1980s,” according to Julien’s Auctions, and they were formerly owned by Jobs’ house manager Mark Sheff.

Sheff previously revealed to Business Insider that because Jobs “kept relatively few things,” he would discard away items frequently.

Additionally, according to the auction house, Jobs and Steve Wozniak “hatched the beginnings of Apple computer in a Los Altos garage while occasionally wearing these sandals,” in 1976. Steve Jobs’ former partner Chrisann Brennan recently remarked to Vogue that the shoes “were his uniform” and demonstrated his emphasis on functionality and simplicity.

The sale of Jobs’ NFT-linked sandals joins a growing list of posthumous digital treasures by David Bowie, Biggie Smalls, and Whitney Houston’s estates that have been sold recently.
