The metaverse campus at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to introduce virtual reality lessons
A virtual reality classroom will be introduced by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as part of a larger initiative to establish a campus in the metaverse to support immersive learning.
The new HKUST Guangzhou campus will open on September 1 in the mixed reality classroom, the university announced on Thursday.
According to Pan Hui, chair professor of computational media and arts at the Guangzhou campus, they plan to hold the opening in the metaverse because many visitors might be from abroad and be unable to attend.
This represents the beginning of the construction of MetaHKUST, a learning platform in the metaverse that will link the university’s campuses in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, allowing students to take classes without regard to their location.
Zoom was adopted by Hong Kong’s schools as an alternate instructional resource during the coronavirus pandemic, but Hui claimed that learning in the metaverse was preferable because Zoom had grown monotonous and uninteresting.
Despite skepticism about the relatively new idea, Wang Yang, vice-president of institutional advancement at HKUST, declared that the metaverse was “here to stay.”
“NFT was a popular term last year. The metaverse is the topic this year. In the future, it will become our reality. We soon envision us residing in the metaverse,” he continued, adding that schools could not afford to pass up such a significant chance.
Physical infrastructure for the metaverse campus, including virtual reality classes, sensors, cameras, and visualization tools, will be deployed first. Students will be able to take the same lecture simultaneously in two parallel physical venues thanks to the digital classroom that has been set up for the two campuses.
Along with classes, occasions like opening days or even graduation may be performed in the virtual realm, and certificates or transcripts could be given out as NFTs. The university says that one of the university’s students will hold their graduation ceremony in the 3D environment in December.
